Janie, there is a great website to educate yourself on all the available types of reconstruction called breastreconstruction.org. If you are thinking about reconstruction educate yourself about all of the pros and cons of the available procedures. Some free flap procedures are not available everywhere but you can still get them done at other places. I have an appt. on the 15th at Mayo Clinic to see if I am a candidate for the DIEP flap procedure. I do not want implants. Procedures that use tissue from your own body are called autologous and there are many types, but some take muscle from the donor site. Be sure and educate yourself as the doctors won't tell you everything!

I had a double mastectomy done 8/27 and had tissue expanders put in . I was a double dd and now about a small b working my way to a small c . Once my chemo is done I will have implants put in the artificial nipples will be done about 2 weeks after then they wil tattoo artificial areolas . They look amazing . And at least they won't sag when I get older .

I have expanders in also but they can do a flap where they take tissue from your stomach or back, there is a third one but at the moment can't remember how that one is done :(

The stomach flap reconstruction version I was told takes about three times the recovery of implants and twice the drains . Not sure what you guys think the tummy tuck would be nice but not sure I am up to it ?

I also had a bilateral mastectomy and began the reconstruction phase during the same surgery. There were 2 doctors, both assisted each other in removing my breasts and using silicone implants. My plastic surgeon will do the second surgery in December where she will do liposuction and insert the fat into my breasts. She will also do the nipple reconstruction and tattoo the areolas. I've seen her work so I'm looking toward to it. Good luck to all.
