Is it okay to take food supplements (like barley capsules) to boost your immune system before and after chemo?

I asked my oncologist about lots of herbal and alternative supplements and he continuously advised against it. While at first I couldn't figure out why, I finally realized that all the stuff we read on the internet regarding immunity boosts and the like are not supported well enough by data, which doctors rely on. Therefore, if they don't know IF it could/will interfere with your chemo then they will definitely tell you to lay off. I finally understood their position and stopped asking. Good luck!

My cancer agency had a pharmacist that could look up any issues. She was even more helpful than the oncologist and gave me options for what i could take safely and at what dose. Antioxidants and immune boosters seemed to be no-go as the purpose of chemo and radiation IS oxidation. Eating whole foods healthfully was the best advice I got.

It --probably-- wouldn't hurt but always check with her oncologist prior to giving her anything. If this is a drink.... there is a chance your mom may not be able to stand the taste. With chemotherapy, your taste sensations change. It might just make her nauseated. Sharon

The best thing will be to check with her Dr. My Dr wanted me to take in the box of green tea I was taking just to make sure the ingredients didn't interfere with my chemo. Now that I'm done with treatment I asked if I can take a herbal detox for my liver and she said no! They really don't like you taking anything during treatment.

Be careful about raw juices that are homemade as they may be more likely to be contaminated. When your immune system is weakened, it's easier to become infected by germs you'd Norma
