How long does it take an axillary node dissection to heal? I'm having pain and numbness, plus, it's difficult to sleep at night. Should I go to a PT?

Yup it hurts more than the mastectomy. I had nasty lymph webbing like a "cord" from my armpit to wrist. I went to Physio and it got me full range, reduced the pain, etc. But find a good one with experience in it.

My aux lymph dicey hurt much more than the lumpectomy. There is a nerve that runs from the underarm down the arm. It felt like electric shocks all the time. I even had a place that if I touched it I felt it somewhere else . The pain finally went away. But sometimes even now 12yrs later, I sometimes feel a small tingle . I don't rember how long it took. Now after bil. Mastectomies. I had the feelings in the healing areas. Try putting your arm extended so that nothing touches it. Maybe it will help you sleep. Aleve or advil may help. Good luckJan

I agree with all the previous answers! My lymph node dissection (in April) hurt more than the mastectomy I ultimately had (in May). I did use a pillow - one that was longer and narrow - and slept on my back with my arm elevated on it. It helped until I could move around in my sleep more. I also had the numbness and it's still not 100% back to normal, but I am used to it, I think. It's a slow and sometimes painful recovery. Definitely get a referral for physical therapy. There are PT's who specialize in post-mastectomy.

Jayme, along with the pain relievers, try resting your arm on a pillow when you sleep and during the day whenever you can. I completely understand what you are going thru. Hang in there.

Just yesterday I ask the R.N. when will the numbness and hurting go away. I put a soft down pillow up under my arm to hold it away from me when I'm sleeping. And of course Tylenol. I had my surgery May 14.

I took extra strength Tylenol for the pain, but I really didn't have much pain. As far as the numbness, I still have numbness 3 months later. My surgeon said it might be forever because nerve ends are cut during the axillary node dissection. I know it is not something I expected but at least I know that these nodes were clear even though the sentinel nodes were not.

Thanks all of you for ur replies. My surgery was May 30. From ur responses i guess im healing at the same pace as all of u. I used the pillow and it helped a lot. Did any of u have a really hard swelling where ur pectoral muscle is?
