I WAS DIAGNOSED WITH INVASIVE LOBULAR CANCER, STAGE 1. I HAD A BILATERAL MASTECTOMY, BUT MY POSTERIOR MARGIN WAS ONLY 3MM FROM THE TUMOR. IS THAT FAR ENOUGH TO BE CONSIDERED A CLEAN MARGIN?

What has your doctor(s) told you? I know my surgeon elected to leave my chest muscle intact since it looked OK to her when she did my mastectomy. I'm thinking from where the breast was peeled off the chest wall to the muscle was like 1mm or so (it seems that's what I recall) and my onc. felt I needed rads. for that reason but that's not her area of expertise. I got a consult with an RT and he told me I needed rads. but not for that reason but because of the distance between the orginial area of IDC and a third area found on surgical pathology (LC I think). I also had an area of DCIS but not sure where the 3rd one was in relation to the other 2 that were right next to each other. I don't think clean margins pertain to mastectomies but rather lumpectomies.

Your surgeon will tell you. If you want confrontation get a second consult. We can't make medical comments. I'm ILC too you lymph node involvement will also determine further treatment.
