Learning About Breast CancerA cancer pill?? Is it an estrogen blocker??
3 comments 4I have been on tamoxifen for two years. There are side effects but that is true for any medicine. For me it gives me the comfort that I am doing something to prevent a recurrence of the cancer.

Survivor since 2011Yes chemo, femara, all these things works against your body. Just endure what ever
Comment 0Yes, that is the main side effects of Femara you can get treatment to help ease the flushes, talk to your gp or oncologist they will help. I am on femara as well and the hot flushes were unbearable I used to take Effexor which helped ease heaps but gave me headaches so now take Clonodine. Good luck

Hi Jan,
I am in my 5th and final year of Femara. First and foremost the major side effect has been the debilitating hot flashes. They have become a bit less intense over the years but they have been the most significant side effect. Other side effects, weight gain, higher cholesterol, vaginal dryness, joint and muscle pain. That's the list I have had to live with. My insurance does not cover the cost of the drug and I am now ordering it out of a Canadian Pharmacy. The cost for 30 pills at an American Pharmacy is the cost for 100 pills out of the Canadian Pharmacy. If not for the Canadian Pharmacy, it would have been a struggle to pay for the drugs.
Everybody has different side effects, mine have been tolerable so I was able to stick with it.
Hi jan I too will be starting femara and have the same question as you will be following your question for answers.

Stage 2B PatientConnie,

Hi Connie, been on Femara since may. I have creepy feelings that come and go, depression that comes and goes, tired and achy that comes and goes. As long as it goes ,it's doable. Would be too scared not to use it. Exercise and general activity helps even when I don't feel like it . It's weird. Jo:-)

Learning About Breast CancerI am 44 was forced into menopause at 43. My dad is on Lupron for prostate cancer. He has been on it for about 10 years- he is 74 now. He has some hot flashes. No bone problems. He has been on fosamax the whole time. Make sure they give you something for osteoporosis.
Comment 0I haven't had periods since I started chemo in April. I'm not complaining either since I had heavy periods. I'm a little nervous to get the three month dose of lupron.

Stage 2B PatientSusie,
I took "Letrozole" which is the generic. I had to order it out of Canada because I could not afford the USA price. It also originated in Mumbai, India sent via either Switzerland or Germany. I have completed the 5 year program. It must have been working.... I had horrible hot flashes. ...

Even if you feel too tired to exercise, force yourself to walk around the block or up and down the driveway. Keep a regular sleep schedule and get a mild sleeping pill if you need it. (Non-prescription med: Melatonin.) Eat the right stuff so your metabolism is balanced and be sure to drink plenty of water.
Like I said, the symptoms never have gone away completely. I think I'm just used to them by now!
I know this was from a few months ago, but I just wanted to say that was my experience with Femara as well. It felt like I had the flu, to the point I could barely get out of bed. The second one caused headaches, but so far the third one has oonly caused increased appetite, which I can work...

Survivor since 2013Take it in the morning.
1 comment 2I took it at every possible time and it made no difference. Dr put me on restoril at bedtime and I rest now. Feel so much better in the morning. Took it for a year and a half but had to get off of it. On aromasin now. Still couldn't sleep without help.
